Properties of Silicon Slag
Silicon slag (off grade silicon) is a by-product when making silicon metal.
The silicon content is from 45% to 95%, and the rest are C, S, P, Al, SiO2, Fe, Ca etc.
The silicon slag is much cheaper than purity silicon metal, and has many industrial applications.
Silicon slag is a water-bearing mixture of zircon sand obtained by alkali melting, acid leaching and water solution.
The colloidal polymer with high quantity has a light yellow-green appearance, spongy shape, strong adsorbability and complex structure. The main components are silicic acid and water, which are acidic after water
immersion, with pH < 1 and solid content about 20%. Due to the chemical reactions occurring in the production process, the silicic acid products such as metasilicic acid, orthosilicic acid, di-metasilicic acid, tri-orthosilicic acid, sodium silicate, unreacted zirconium sand and zirconium oxychloride in the silica slag are still unclear in their structure. Influenced by intermittent alkali fusion operation, different particle size composition of zircon sand and different decomposition rate of zircon sand, the neutral content fluctuates widely.
Application:
1. It’s a good substitute for ferro silicon in steel making which has advantage in reducing the making cost.
2. The silicon slag powder can be made silicon briquette which has far and wide market at home and abroad.
3. It is used as deoxidizer in steel making.
